Can Surface Modification Reduce the Viscosity of ATH-Filled Compounds

Yes, surface modification can effectively lower the melt viscosity of ATH-filled polymer compounds, allowing higher ATH loading and smoother extrusion. Raw ultrafine ATH powder has hydrophilic hydroxyl groups on particle surfaces. When dispersed directly into non-polar polyolefin melts, particles tend to agglomerate and create high internal friction, which sharply increases melt viscosity. Proper surface treatment changes particle surface characteristics and reduces flow resistance of the compound.

Mechanism of viscosity reduction

  1. Eliminate ATH micro-agglomerates
Unmodified fine ATH clusters together through hydrogen bonding. These agglomerates occupy more volume and block polymer chain movement. Surface modification caps hydroxyl groups and breaks inter-particle attraction. Individual particles disperse uniformly in the melt, reducing flow resistance.
  2. Improve wetting between polymer and ATH
The organic modifier layer on ATH is compatible with polyolefin resins. The molten polymer can fully wet each particle surface, replacing trapped air and voids around particles. This reduces friction at the filler-matrix interface.
  3. Lubricating effect of modifier layer
Stearic acid modification provides obvious lubrication. The stearate organic layer acts as a slip agent between ATH particles and polymer chains, delivering a significant viscosity drop.
Silane coupling agents mainly improve interfacial bonding and dispersion. Its viscosity-lowering effect is milder than stearic acid, but it still reduces viscosity compared with unmodified ATH. Silane’s main advantage is preserving mechanical properties while improving flow.

Difference between silane and stearic acid on viscosity

  • Stearic acid modified ATH: Largest viscosity reduction. Ideal for artificial stone and general plastics where mechanical and electrical requirements are less strict. Too much stearic acid may cause blooming and degrade mechanical/electrical performance.
  • Silane modified ATH: Moderate viscosity reduction. It improves dispersion without excessive lubrication. This suits LSZH cable compounds, where stable tensile, elongation and dielectric properties are mandatory.

Important notes

  1. Viscosity reduction has limits. Even modified ATH is rigid inorganic filler. Melt viscosity will still rise as ATH loading increases, but the rising trend is much slower than unmodified ATH.
  2. Over-dosing modifier will excessively reduce viscosity. Free modifier migrates to the composite surface and causes blooming.
  3. Poor coating uniformity weakens viscosity improvement. Partial unmodified ATH still forms agglomerates and keeps viscosity high.
  4. Modification temperature must stay below 110°C. If ATH suffers partial dehydration, particle morphology changes and viscosity control becomes unstable.

Practical benefits

  • Lower extrusion pressure and less equipment wear
  • Higher possible ATH loading to achieve better flame retardancy
  • Faster production speed and more stable continuous compounding
  • Reduced risk of melt fracture and surface defects on extruded profiles or cable jackets

Surface modification can reduce melt viscosity of ATH-filled compounds. Stearic acid treatment offers stronger lubrication and larger viscosity reduction. Silane modification brings moderate viscosity improvement while maintaining mechanical and electrical performance for high-end LSZH cable materials. The viscosity drop mainly comes from better particle dispersion and improved filler wetting, which helps stable extrusion and higher filler loading.
